Atlantis Headwear Partners With ReTraze To Add Recycled Visors to Collection

The Italian sustainable headwear supplier determined that using recycled plastic for its visors will reduce CO2-equivalent emissions by 37%.

Key Takeaways

Plastic Waste Reduction: Atlantis Headwear (asi/37380) partners with ReTraze to upcycle fishing nets and plastic bottles, aligning with its mission to reduce oceanic plastic waste.

Sustainable Visors: Starting in 2024, Atlantis will use recycled PE visors in its caps, cutting CO2 emissions by 37% compared to conventional plastic visors.

Sustainable Italian brand Atlantis Headwear (asi/37380) is making strides in its mission to reduce plastic waste, thanks to a collaboration with ReTraze, a company that upcycles discarded fishing nets and plastic bottles to keep them out of oceans and landfills.

Starting with 2024 production runs, Atlantis will now use traceable recycled polyethylene (PE) plastic in its cap visors, with materials sourced from ReTraze.

Starting with its 2024 production, Atlantis Headwear (asi/37380) will be using recycled PE visors from upcycling company ReTraze.

“We are thrilled to partner with a company like ReTraze, which shares our dedication to innovation and sustainability,” said Federico Pasini, vice president of Atlantis Headwear. “The environmental benefits of recycled visors on our caps align perfectly with our mission to produce high-quality sustainable headwear.”

More than 430 million tons of plastic are generated annually, according to the United Nations Environment Programme, and a substantial portion of oceanic plastic waste consists of so-called “ghost gear” – fishing nets and other supplies that are abandoned, lost and discarded. Since 2016, ReTraze has partnered with small businesses, fishers and nongovernmental organizations to gather these discarded materials. Through extensive research and innovation, ReTraze has developed a vertical supply chain that transforms abandoned fishing nets and other plastics into 100% recycled PE panels.

ReTraze takes discarded fishing nets and other plastic scraps and turns them into 100% recycled PE pellets, which are then made into panels that can be used in products like cap visors.

Through a recent life cycle assessment, Atlantis Headwear pinpointed conventional PE plastic visors as a critical area for environmental improvement due to carbon emissions, with the analysis highlighting the need for an alternative that would lessen the environmental footprint without compromising quality. The new Atlantis x ReTraze visors generate 37% fewer CO2-equivalent emissions compared to conventionally manufactured visors.

Atlantis, a brand of Benefit Corporation Master Italia SpA, is focused on creating sustainable branded hats and beanies, with the goal of generating demand for products made from recycled and organic sources and raising awareness in the supply chain of more conscious choices.
